SESO
purchased, in April 2002, a new production-ready Magnetorheological Finishing
(MRF) system. This technique is a real breakthrough for the polishing
and fine figuring of "industrial high precision" optics : a
magnetic fluid now replaces the conventional rigid polishing lap.
This machine (patented in the United States) is capable to achieve in
short processing times the final figuring of optics up to 200 mm diameter,
with accuracies of 5 nm.
For example ...

This multiple-axis computer controlled machine allows the partial
iteration of spherical or aspherical surfaces. This technique
is efficient and already proved on many types of substrates.
